Generally speaking, it has always been the policy of District 147 Schools to remain open regardless of weather. If cause for closing the schools occurs, please check the following sources for emergency closing information.

The television stations for computerized emergency closing information are Channels 9 and 32.
Included in the RADIO or TELEVISION announcement will always be, "West Harvey-Dixmoor District No. 147"

Who Closes the Schools?
The Superintendent is empowered to close the District schools or to dismiss them early in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which threaten the health or safety of students and personnel. Such action is never to be taken lightly, for public education is one of the principle functions of the community and should be maintained at a normal level except in extreme circumstances.
In making the decision to close schools, the Superintendent/Designee shall consider many factors including the following:
- Weather conditions, both existing and predicted
- Driving, traffic, and parking conditions affecting public and private transportation facilities
- Actual occurrence or imminent possibility of any emergency condition which would make the operation of schools difficult or dangerous
- Inability of teaching personnel to report for duty
General Disaster Plans and Policy
Children will follow the general procedures for each type of disaster:
- Fire Explosion, etc.
Evacuation of building to pre-arranged area - quietly and orderly. - Storms with High Velocity Winds, Tornadoes, Heavy Downpour, Lightning, Hail, etc.
- Disaster Alert - classrooms are evacuated to assigned corridors or multipurpose room; children to be retained at regular closing hours until storm subsides.
NOTE: During normal rain showers or snow conditions, children will be dismissed at regular dismissal times.
