School Closing Policy and Crtieria ​

It has always been the policy of District 147 Schools to remain open regardless of weather. If cause for closing the schools occurs prior to the school day, announcements will be made on radio stations WMAQ-670, WGN-720, WBBM-780, WCFL-1000, WCLR-102 FM, and WFYR-l03-l/2 FM. The television stations for computerized emergency closing information are Channels 2, 7, 9 and 32.

West Harvey-Dixmoor District 147 Emergency closing will also be posted on the District Website at www.whd147.org.

The Superintendent of Schools is empowered to close schools or dismiss students early in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies, which threaten the health or safety of students and personnel.

In making the decision to close schools, the Superintendent/designee shall consider many factors including the following:

• Existing and predicted weather conditions.
• Driving, traffic, and parking conditions affecting public and private transportation facilities.
• Actual occurrence or imminent possibility of any emergency condition that would make the opening of schools dangerous.
• Inability for personnel to report for duty.
